Semaglutide is a medication that mimics a natural hormone known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) that was originally used to treat type-II diabetics, now FDA-approved for weight loss. You’ve likely heard of this medication by its other names, WeGovy or Ozempic.

Semaglutide works by slowing down gastric emptying, sending signals of “fullness” to the brain. The result of this process is a powerful appetite suppression balancing the individual’s own natural insulin production.

Semaglutide is not recommended for those with a personal history of pancreatitis, a personal or family history medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Guests with an allergy to Semaglutide, Type 1 diabetes and those currently pregnant/breastfeeding may not be eligible.

Majority of guests suffer from mild but tolerable side effects, but dosage adjustments can be made to help reduce those effects throughout treatment.  The most common side effects are related to GI upset. Gas, abdominal pain, or heartburn, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, burping, but also fatigue, dizziness, or headache. Possible serious side effects: Increased heart rate, Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma, Cholecystitis / Cholelithiasis, Pancreatitis, Anaphylaxis.

Most notably, its success with weight loss. It also lowers A1C blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack.

The length depends on your medical history, tolerance of the medication, and the amount of weight you desire to lose.   We recommend guests try this treatment for at least 4 weeks.

Semaglutide is given once a week as a subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, thigh, hip, or upper arm. Using one of the smallest needles, our team of medical professionals will make the process quick and nearly painless.

After approved by Fika’s Medical Provider, you can schedule by calling, booking online through Fika’s website or walking in. Ideally, semaglutide injections are given on the same day each week.

When using Semaglutide, there is the potential of experiencing low blood sugar. Semaglutide is FDA approved for weight loss. Mounjaro is currently only approved for type II diabetes. Phentermine is the most common weight loss medication but can only be used for short term due to its stimulant effects.

Hypoglycemia may leave you feeling hungry, sweaty, dizzy, tired, shaky and with a rapid heartbeat.

Results will vary depending on your initial starting weight, medical history and what you are prescribed.  Studies show weight loss of up to 15% of bodyweight for those on Semaglutide for 4+ months.  It is important to note that semaglutide is designed to enhance the results of a healthy diet and exercise.
